Good evening, and welcome to Dan Bane's Sleepy Time Mumbles. A podcast you can miss. I'm Dan Bain, and every episode I improvise a low stakes podcast for you to fall asleep to. This is a subscriber exclusive micro sleep episode. So now put down your screens, turn off your phones, and close your eyes. Now it's time to be mumbled to micro sleep. I don't know if you've noticed this, but there is definitely a mode to the opening of a historical narrative podcast. I listen to a few of them. I wouldn't say the majority of pod content I consume, but I tend to be more on the two guys explain how something works. Model of podcasts. Yesterday the heel came off her shoe. And it's very important that she have a pair of shoes so that she can go to work. Her work at the Ministry of War Research. But the fact that she is going to the cobblers that morning is going to be more important than she could ever possibly imagine. The buses have stopped running. So it's a long walk through the city streets. Hobbling with only one correct height shoe on. She arrives at Smith and Calamities, her local cobbler slash greengrosser, and exchanges pleasantries with Mr Calamity, the proprietor. Hello, he says, How are things for you today? You look a little lopsided, for indeed she was lopsided. She handed over the pair of shoes. See these? They're a favourite of mine. But the heels come off one of them, and I can't stand. I can't stand it either. The war that is, said Mr Calamity. They both laughed. It was good to find a moment of levity. She dropped the shoes off and walked out in her bare stockings out into the city streets onto the cobblestones and the irregular pavements. Oh how it was. It began to rain, and she could feel the stones and the wet on her bare feet, and that's why she was running fifteen minutes late to starting work at the war department. Oh she'd worked there since day two of the war with and she was working on wars. She intelligence, war intelligence, and also facts. She was looking for war facts and corroborating war facts with war intelligence. And so that day it was so bad that she was fifteen minutes late because she wasn't there to corroborate a bomb. Oh there was a bomb because of the war. And as she arrived around the corner of Fleetworth and Farns Manga Street, she saw her office, her grand office building, looming like an iceberg emerging from the mists of the North Sea, intent on hiding most of itself beneath the waves, because this was a building of secrets. And as it as she saw it, it was explosion time and she wasn't in there, which was good for her, but bad for everyone else, because she had an exceptional gift for sniffing out explosives. And if she had been in there, oh there's no chance there's no chance that there would be any war bombs going off. But there were because she wasn't there because of her shoe. Isn't that a piece of historical interest?
